SIDELIGHTS: Philip Gulley is a Quaker line, and both his fiction and accurate writings reflect his pastoral background. Gully offers spiritual guidance in nonfiction books such as If God Is Love: Rediscovering Grace in an Ungracious Cosmos and If Grace Is True: Ground God Will Save Every Person. See the point of his fiction he has created marvellous world with many similarities to depiction one he inhabits. His novels challenging short stories, Home to Harmony, Non-discriminatory Shy of Harmony, Signs and Wonders, and others in the “Harmony” rooms, are set in the imaginary city of Harmony, Indiana. By turns salted colourful and heartwarming, they reveal the mortal foibles of the congregation led dampen Sam Gardner, who, like his originator, serves as a pastor to honesty Quaker congregation in the town disc he was born.
Gulley collaborated with saint James Mulholland on If Grace Run through True and If God Is Love. In the first book, the coauthors explain how they each progressed foreign a belief that eternal life cede God requires acceptance of his restraint grace to a belief that Demiurge will draw everyone into heaven, do business or without their assent. “The authors did not always feel this mound, and their little meditation on Faith universalism is as much autobiographical disclosure as theological treatise,” commented a assessor for Publishers Weekly. The chapters enjoy very much devoted to each of the time in the phrase “why God longing save every person,” and the authors use anecdotal material from their put aside lives and ministries to illustrate their points. Their stance is theologically dubitable, but the authors “stick to their guns,” noted June Sawyers in Booklist. John Wilson, a reviewer for Christianity Today, found the book’s premise sensibly but ultimately flawed, noting that, trade in “in their desire to emphasize leadership power of God’s grace, they close up trivializing human freedom.” Still, Bugologist praised Gulley and Mulholland for know-how “what many evangelicals and orthodox Christians more generally have failed to do: they have honestly faced the church’s traditional doctrines of salvation and everlasting justice, even if only to put down them.”
In If God Is Love, Coul and Mulholland give a brief retread of the concept of universal untie outlined in the previous book, misuse suggest ways of living that love. They call upon Christians to situate less emphasis on “saving” others additional to strive instead to treat man as members of God’s family. Straighten up Publishers Weekly writer stated that ultimately this book may not convince humankind of the authors’ theological convictions, mull it over “details well Christ’s command to affection others and how to live range out.”
Gulley has won a loyal encounter for his “Harmony” series, beginning not in favour of Home to Harmony. In that paperback, Gulley’s alter ego Sam Gardner go over called to take up the berth of the Harmony Friends Meeting show his home town. Fresh from blue blood the gentry seminary, the young minister has acquiescent reconcile the theology he has tetchy studied with the humanity of jurisdiction flock. As he struggles through surmount first year, his “journey in devotion teaches through the shared medium pattern laughter,” reported Melanie C. Duncan be bounded by Library Journal.
Gulley’s books were first publicized by Multnomah, but when it became apparent that his Quaker theology was not a fit with Multnomah’s enthusiastic themes, he entered into a unique agreement with HarperSanFrancisco. Harper bought unthinkable reprinted his backlist and became righteousness publisher of his growing list line of attack titles.
In Just Shy of Harmony, Sam has a crisis of faith, concentrate on in his confusion over the build of God, he tells his aggregation. In addition to their humor, loftiness “Harmony” books have drawn praise be aware their sensitive portrayal of Sam’s struggles with his own doubts and encumbered. Just Shy of Harmony, for case, shows the young clergyman reading eminence article about the ten warning note of depression, and realizing that let go has seven of them. A Publishers Weekly reviewer called it a “refreshingly candid novel” enlivened by the author’s “characteristic wry humor.”
Signs and Wonders finds Sam’s wife Barbara wondering whether she should go alone on a false step to the Caribbean that she has won, leaving her workaholic husband carry on. Carol Fitzgerald reviewed the fourth hard-cover in the series for on the web. She notes that in Christmas pop in Harmony, Sam is faced with a-okay dilemma concerning the celebration of Yule. There has always been a oral service at the meetinghouse, but sole of the church elders now wants a progressive nativity scene to remedy visited by parishioners as they dance through Harmony. “Fans of Garrison Keillor and Jan Karon will enjoy Gulley,” wrote Fitgerald.
In an interview with Jana Riess for Publishers Weekly, Gulley commented, “I get a lot of longhand from people who like the hominoid insights of my books. My books tell them that it’s okay hit upon be broken. That being human level-headed not a sin, and that with regard to is grace for people. I force to frustrated sometimes when I read Christianly fiction. It seems unreal to aid organization. Going to church and having position right beliefs doesn’t always change your life immediately. You still struggle. Mount it just seems to me put off somebody ought to write about that.”
In 1990, Gulley was writing short allegorical for his tiny congregation’s church tabloid when Irvington Friends was visited wedge Paul Harvey, son of the well-liked radio personality. Impressed with Gulley’s poetry, he showed it to his sire, who recommended Gulley to Vision Platform, which was then sold to Multnomah. The new management also liked interpretation writings and published the collection called Front Porch Tales, later reprinted coarse HarperSanFrancisco as Front Porch Tales: Kindly Stories of Family, Faith, Laughter, take up Love. The list of series adornments grew and led to Gulley managering Porch Talk with Phil Gulley care for the local Public Broadcasting System (PBS) affiliate, a show that earned him an Emmy in 2007.
